WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Roy Blunt (Mo.) released the following statement today commending the U.S. Court of Federal Claims decision finding the Army Corps of Engineers liable for historic flooding along the Missouri River.
“I’m pleased that the Federal Claims Court has found what Missouri families, farmers, and business owners have been saying for more than a decade: the Army Corps of Engineers’ mismanagement of the Missouri River has resulted in widespread damages with substantial costs,” Blunt said. “I hope this decision is the first step in a new direction for the Corps. I look forward to working with my colleagues to ensure the river is managed in a way that prioritizes flood control, while balancing other interests.”
In six of the eight years between 2007 and 2014, most notably in 2011, Missourians were impacted by historic flooding along the Missouri River. Today’s court ruling finds the Army Corps of Engineers liable for the flooding, based on its management plan that prioritized fish and wildlife over flood management.
