Blunt, Burr Demand Oversight of Health, Education, and Labor Spending in American Rescue Plan

March 29, 2021

WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Senator Roy Blunt (Mo.), Ranking Member of the U.S. Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education and Related Agencies, and U.S. Senator Richard Burr (N.C.), Ranking Member of the U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions, sent letters to Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra, Department of Education Secretary Miguel Cardona, and Department of Labor Secretary Martin J. Walsh requesting spending details for the funding provided to each of the departments in the American Rescue Plan.

As the senators note in their letters, the request for a spend plan and periodic obligations reports is consistent with requirements that were included in all five bipartisan COVID-19 packages that were enacted last year. The American Rescue Plan does not include the same requirement, making it difficult for the committees of jurisdiction to exercise appropriate oversight.
