Blunt: “It’s Simply Wrong to Deny Medical Treatment to Babies Born Alive”

February 25, 2019

WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Senator Roy Blunt (Mo.) released the following statement after Democrats blocked the Senate from moving forward on S.311, the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act.

“It’s simply wrong to deny medical treatment to babies born alive,” said Blunt. “I’m disappointed the Senate failed to move forward on this bill, which would have ensured all newborns, regardless of the circumstances of their birth, have the same right to life. I’ll continue advocating for policies that protect the most vulnerable members of our society.”

Currently, federal law does not provide adequate protections to a born child who survives an abortion. The legislation would protect newborns that survive botched abortions by requiring appropriate care and admission to a hospital. The law would ensure newborns are entitled to the same care offered to any child born alive at the same gestational age.
