WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Roy Blunt (Mo.), Chairman of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education, today announced that the subcommittee has voted to restore year-round Pell Grants as part of the FY2017 appropriations bill, making college more affordable for students. The measure is expected to come before the full committee later this week.
“Pell Grants are a vital tool for making college more affordable for students in Missouri and across the nation,” Blunt said. “By allowing full and part-time students to receive an additional Pell Grant during the year, usually for a summer session, we’re helping them stay on track for graduation, enter or re-enter the workforce sooner, and graduate with less debt. This bill will provide an estimated one million students, on average, an extra $1,650 to help pay for college. As a former history teacher, I couldn’t be more pleased that we were able to work in a bipartisan way to expand access to higher education, and I urge my colleagues to advance this bill through the full committee.”
