Blunt-McCaskill Bill to Make Ste. Genevieve a National Park Passes Senate Energy & Natural Resources Committee

July 13, 2016

WASHINGTON – Missouri Senators Roy Blunt and Claire McCaskill today announced that the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee has approved their legislation to establish a new National Park in Ste. Genevieve. The bill is now ready to be considered by the full Senate.

“Ste. Genevieve captures a time in our nation’s history that would otherwise be lost if not for the remarkable dedication of all the Missourians who have had a hand in preserving this unique area,” Blunt said. “I’m glad the committee recognized Ste. Genevieve’s significant historic value by advancing our bill to include it in our National Park System. Doing so will allow visitors from across the country to experience a taste of colonial life and gain a deeper appreciation for our state’s rich heritage.”

McCaskill continued, “We’re one step closer to making sure the rich history of St. Genevieve is preserved for our kids, grandkids, and generations to come. As a National Historical Park this site can be best cared for and preserved as our nation’s historic treasures should.”

In May, the NPS released its final Ste. Genevieve Special Resource Study, which found that portions of the Ste. Genevieve historic district meet the criteria for inclusion in the National Park System.

The village of Ste. Genevieve dates back to the early 1700s, making it Missouri’s oldest town. It was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1960, also making it one of the oldest National Historic Landmark districts in the country. It is known for its centuries-old homes featuring unique French vertical log architecture.
