President’s Energy Tax Will Drive up Gas Prices and Grocery Bills for Hardworking Missouri Families

February 05, 2016

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Roy Blunt (Mo.) released the following statement on the president’s proposal to include a $10 tax on every barrel of oil:

“Seven out of 10 Americans are struggling to make ends meet, and the president’s new energy tax will make it even harder. A $10 tax on every barrel of oil, without any corresponding relief, will inevitably be passed on to consumers, driving up gas prices and grocery bills and straining family budgets even further. Low and middle-income families will be particularly hard hit, forcing them to cut back on other necessary expenses just to make it to and from work.

“The president has clearly demonstrated his contempt for American energy – from his excessive regulations on coal fired plants to driving down fossil fuel production on federal land – and this is more of the same. Hardworking Americans cannot afford to foot the bill for the president’s politically-driven climate agenda and his policies continue to hurt our domestic energy producers and their families. I will continue working to protect Missourians from the president’s ill-advised policies, and to advance real solutions to increase energy production and lower costs.”
