Senator Blunt Urges Senate To Pass Disaster Relief Bill And Help Farm Families Immediately

August 14, 2012

SPRINGFIELD, MO. – U.S. Senator Roy Blunt (Mo.) reiterated his calls today for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (Nev.) to bring the Senate back to Washington this week and vote on the House-passed disaster relief package, which will help Missouri farmers, ranchers, families, and job creators who are suffering from one of the worst droughts in recent history.

“Once again, I urge the Senate majority to return to Washington this week
and help Missouri farm families by passing critical disaster assistance,” said
Blunt, who serves as Ranking Member of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration, and Related Agencies.

“As I travel across Missouri, I continue to hear stories about the toll that
this drought has taken on farmers, ranchers, and other job creators statewide,” Blunt continued. “The President's unilateral actions are simply insufficient. The House and Senate left Washington without adjourning, and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid could still figure out how to pass the bill and respond to this disaster now.”

At the end of July, all of Missouri’s counties were designated a state of “severe” to “exceptional” drought – representing the worst level of drought possible. During the 2012 crop year, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has designated 1,628 counties across 33 states as disaster areas – more than half of all the counties nationwide.

According to the latest crop report, nearly half of the nation’s corn crop is now in rated in the worst condition, with Missouri topping the list as one of the hardest hit states.
Approximately 73 percent of the domestic cattle inventory nationwide is located in an area that has been impacted by this drought, and 59 percent of America’s pasture and rangeland is in “poor” to “very poor” condition, compared to 38 percent a year ago.
